Special Thank You this morning going out to Jules Radino of Blue Oyster Cult. Last month the band was featured in the AT &T Audience Network Concert Series, and they performed Agents Of Fortune in it’s entirety. Jules used his 1.5 Steel–6.5 x 14 which has been his main snare on the road for several years now. He has also performed live with Blue Oyster Cult and his additional projects with his 1.5 Steel–5.5 x 15 & 4 x 15.
I got to know Jules through long time supporter and pal-Monte Yoho of The Outlaws. Have had a lot of good times with him and the band. I always look forward to seeing them because it is such a guaranteed great time. And, as this clip illustrates, they unfailingly show why they are one the greatest bands in Rock history.
See you soon Jules!
Country artist Shane Gamble released his new record “American Heart” worldwide on June 14th. I had been waiting for the release, and picked this one up right away. Mike Dawson used his 1.5 Steel–5.5 x 15 on it, and I really have been looking forward to the record coming out.
Shane & Mike selected that drum after going through a whole array of different drums, and that to me…..Was the greatest. I have listened to it many times now, and it is one that will always be in rotation here. From start to finish, it is a true Country record that is well produced, thoughtful, and has stellar musicianship & songwriting all the way through.
Additionally, I just had to add this as well. I was on the road this last weekend, and had a lag time after the sound check and before the show. It was a really hot day, so I grabbed a seat under the stage and checked into Facebook. Shane was live with the band at the “Rally In The Valley” in Frederick, MD., and he was doing a live stream. I have not seen them live due to the distance of their shows. I just shook my head, and could not stop watching and listening to this. They were incredible. And so incredible…I would say they are one of those bands that are even better live than in the studio. That is rare, and always has been. It reminded me of bands like The Outlaws & Blackberry Smoke to name a few. Those bands have always produced great records as well….But they truly soar live. The third and fourth pic are from the show this last weekend.
Mike Dawson was also using a 1.5 Steel–6.5 x 15 for this show which was great to see….And hear! That drum will be in Modern Drummer in an upcoming issue, and am really looking forward to it. Congrats to all of you in this band…..Your great.
Wanted to issue a big Thanks to Damian Figures out of Madison, Alabama. Damian is responsible for publishing the “Snare Of The Day” for Forks Drum Closet in Nashville, and has selected three of my drums since they started this a short time ago. You do a great job on this Damian, and it is always really appreciated here.
As one of the premier drum shops in this country, Forks Drum Closet has been hugely supportive of Beier Drums. They always keep a full range of them in stock, and my drums have done extremely well there. I am always sending them replacements for sold items, sending special order items, etc.., From A-Z….The whole organization is so well managed, it is easy to see why they are at the top of their game.
Thanks Again Damian & Fork’s Drum Closet…..
Tommy Rickard (Vain, Linda Perry, Eric Martin, Ronnie Montrose, Scott Weiland) was recently in Las Vegas for a set of gigs, and as he told me…he would have his 1.5 Steel–5.5 x 14. It was great to see him with it playing with Dee Snider, Keisha, and others on that run….
I really appreciated this for several reasons: He is an amazing drummer, has been great to deal with, and he absolutely loves that drum. That drum as well, like so many these days out of here, was sent out with Aquarian Heads. I have become a big fan of them as well over the last year, as well as becoming a big fan of his playing.
The clip with Dee Snider is a must watch. Thank You Tommy Rickard….This was very much appreciated here…
Last month brought The Outlaws to town, and like always…They were incredible live, it was great to see them, and it simply was a great time.
Monte Yoho had his 1.5 Steel–6.5 x 14 as he has for a long time now. That is his main, and has been almost since the day he got it. He also uses a 1.5 Steel–5.5 x 14 as an auxiliary, and used that as his primary initially. David Dix has also used one of my earlier drums live as well.
It has been some time, and it was so great to David Dix again. He is back with the band, and him and Monte are dual-drumming. Dual drumming is something that goes back to the early 20th century, and these two have produced some of the greatest clips of that in music history. Modern Drummer pointed this out as well in the February 2007 Issue including them in a list for their work on The Outlaws 1978 live album “Bring It Back Alive,” on “Stick Around For Rock & Roll”. This article was also republished in the January 2012 digital issue.
I am not going to say I was happy, but I will say I was ecstatic to hear they have a new live album coming out this Fall, and Monte used his 1.5 Steel–6.5 x 14 on the entire record. I love all of their studio records, but they are one of those bands that even shine brighter live. The Allman Brothers, The Doobie Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band….Many, especially from that time, were like this. And bands like Blackberry Smoke, along with many others today, keep that tradition alive.
I included a couple of pics I just received from Steve Markowski. Steve is a Connecticut based drummer who performs regularly, and also is a huge fan of The Outlaws. He really has taken time out to study and watch clips of Monte Yoho’s playing as well, & recently picked up a 1.5 Steel–6.5 x 14 from Forks in Nashville. Thank You Steve!
Look forward to seeing you all soon….Thanks Again for everything….
Wanted to send out a really big Thank You to Mike Shawcross at Long & McQuade-Edmonton North. He recently did a clip on his Go Pro from the store with the 1.5 Steel–4 x 15 that they have in stock. I cannot tell you Mike how much I appreciated that. Great job! It is ever-interesting to me to see how you guys use my drums, tune them, and hear your thoughts on them. You have all taken time out for me and my gear…And I could not be happier to be represented by Long & McQuade in Canada.
Looking forward to staying in touch….Thank You Again for everything….
Chad Melchert has been busy as always with sessions, and live with Gord Bamford…
The band recently filmed the video for the song “Breakfast Beer”. Thanks Chad for the great shot from the set (first pic below), and for using your 1.5 Steel–4 x 15. He also used that same drum when they performed recently at the halftime show of the Edmonton Eskimos in Clarke Stadium, & will be using the drum on more tour dates in July. The band will also be touring Australia in October 2016 on the This Crazy Life Tour. He will be using a 1.5 Steel–6.5 x 14 for that tour.
This story will be updated as the video comes out, & more tour dates are added. Thanks Again Chad for everything….!
Nashville pro Mike Zimmerman is using his 1.5 Steel–6.5 x 14 on the Kenny Rogers Farewell Tour, and that is something I was really looking forward to. According to him-The drum is working out perfectly. To have a drum with a player like Mike, on such an important, and for that matter historic tour like this…Is truly great news here.
Mike was introduced to my gear by Michael Grando. Michael is another Nashville ace & holds the seat for Joe Diffie. That band live…Was one of the best times I had last year on the road. Not sure I am going to be able to see them this Summer yet…but I truly am hoping. The third pic below is Mike using Michael’s 1.5 Steel–4 x 15 which Michael has used live with Joe Diffie, along with his 1.5 Steel–5.5 x 14.
I will be updating this story on Mike as the tour goes on, and will also be at the show on July 24th in Chicago. I am really looking forward to seeing this a great deal. Thanks Again for the phone call Mike, and your enthusiasm for my gear. When you guys take the time out to call me and contact me…That is the greatest to me. I am always so anxious to hear from you guys, and just want to make sure everything is going great. It truly is hard to tell you how much I appreciated that. Looking forward to seeing you and this band in July!
It was great to see Danny Thompson of the Alan Parsons Live Project in the May on-line issue of Modern Drummer’s “On The Beat”. It was a great read, and Danny discussed his background, & how he got his current position with Alan Parsons,
Danny was cool enough to take time out for me when they rolled through Milwaukee last year. He used a 1.5 Steel–5.5 x 14 that night…And has been using one ever since. He is an amazingly talented & unbelievable player. Plus, the guy is great person as well. I saw a comment below the Modern Drummer article that said Danny was “One of the best drummers I’ve ever had the pleasure to see perform”. That is exactly what I said after I saw him play to many people. Him, with this unreal band, with Alan Parsons….Is something you simply have to see and hear.
The timing of this was ironic. I had been going through some of the clips from the show last year and will be posting another one or two soon. I took a lot of them, and had a great angle from the side of the stage. Link below to a clip from the show here.
Thanks Again Danny, Congrats on the spot in Modern Drummer, Thank You for using my 1.5 Steel–5.5 x 14, and again for the introduction to Tommy Rickard…..
From a referral from a great friend of mine, I recently heard from Mat Donaldson of Drum World Tulsa about making him a drum. It was great to hear from him. After discussing it with him, he wanted an 8 x 14. It really was amazing how like-minded we are about drums. We were completely on the same page. I was working on a very limited timetable though because Mat wanted to use the drum for a new record he was doing with Weston Horn, Steve Snyder, Chris Hyde, & Rockwell Ryan Ripperger at Dockside Studios. Well, I got it done…And he absolutely loved the drum, and was able to have it in the studio for the new upcoming record. I am so looking forward to picking up a copy when it is released…
Mat is also the owner of Drum World Tulsa, which is arguably one of the best drum shops in this country, and a mainstay in the business. Thanks Again for everything Mat….It was a lot of fun and a pleasure to deal with you…
“The Beier 1.5 Steel–8 x 14 is my new go-to drum. I am completely happy with it…”
